Notes for Book Reviewers

Notes for Book Reviewers

  • Innovative Educational Research (INNER) also publishes review papers. The editorial board recognizes the value of review works as integral components of scientific and academic publications.
  • Book reviews written in American English are accepted. The reviews published in INNER are assigned DOI (Digital Object Identifier) numbers and are indexed in the relevant databases.

What is a Review Paper?

  • A review paper is a text that introduces a book, article, or compilation to a broader audience by discussing, critiquing, and interpreting its content and structure in a constructive manner.
  • A book review differs from a book report in that the latter merely summarizes the content of the book, whereas an academic review paper critically analyzes the content, methodology, and structure of the work.
  • A book review is expected to critically evaluate the content, methodology, and structure of the text. It should also assess the coherence of the ideas presented, the consistency of the arguments, and the use of sources and references.

Writing the Review

The author of the review should ensure that the content includes the following key points:

  • A concise and engaging introduction to the topic or subject and a discussion of the text under consideration.
  • A summary of the original text.
  • An analysis of the inferences drawn from the text, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses, and referencing the logical flow of the arguments.
  • A discussion and conclusion section that reflects the reviewer’s perspectives in relation to the original text.

Format of the Review

The formatting requirements for research articles also apply to book reviews. Therefore, the writing rules and citation style must be adhered to.

  • The title of the book review must differ from the title of the book being reviewed.
  • The following information must be included in the review paper:
    • The name(s) of the author(s) or editor(s) (indicating if the text is a compilation).
    • The title of the book.
    • The year of publication.
    • The place of publication.
    • The name of the publisher.
    • The total number of pages.

The Review Process for Book Reviews

  • INNER prioritizes reviews of books or texts published within the last five years. To request a review of their publication(s), publishers or authors should contact INNER via email at editor@innovativedu.org .
  • Due to space limitations, INNER gives priority to monographs authored by individuals. Other types of reviews are considered thereafter. Reviews of textbooks and handbooks are not published in INNER.
  • Before beginning a book review for INNER, reviewers are advised to contact the journal editor.
  • There should be no personal connections between the reviewer and the author(s) of the original text (e.g., working in the same department, being members of the same thesis committee, or having close personal friendships).

INNER is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal publishing rigorous research to advance educational sciences.
